2011-12-17 03:43:05 : The Siam Society
The Siam Society is a surprisingly little-known outlet for Thai and International culture. Their motto is: "Knowledge gives rise to friendship" which adequately describes the objective of this organisation. Founded in 1904, the society operates under Royal Patronage as a non-profit organization and features information on the arts and sciences of Thailand and other countries. The Siam Society offers lecture programmes and cultural, musical and artistic performances that are very often in English. It also features a library with a number of rare books. The Kamthieng House ethnological museum is 160-year old traditional teakwood house situated within the grounds of the Society's premises and is a very good example of Northern Thai architecture. The Society features guest speakers from all over the world and has an ongoing schedule of cultural events. It is an extremely interesting place to go, but to get the best out of it you’ll probably need to be in Bangkok for a while. Probably not a high priority attraction if you are only here for a few days, unless something of interest coincides with your trip.
